Bruges is a city that feels as though time has passed it by. I wasn't prepared for that – and then I stood at the hotel window at night, looking down at this alley, the streetlamps against the last trace of evening sky, the silence.

The photograph came from an impulse to hold onto that moment. The painting from a need to understand it.
